The long-planned make-over of South Street will come to fruition. Improvements to the stretch between front and 8th Streets, including re-paving, new sidewalks, new lighting, tree planting and bicycle racks have been advocated for several years by the South Street Headhouse District. The plans have finally been approved by PennDOT, according to Dave Hammond, Headhouse District's executive director, and contracts can be let. Construction may begin as early as Spring 2008 and will proceed westward from Front Street in order to cause as little disruption to tourist areas as possible during the height of the tourist season.
